Cranbrook, BC

On the plains between the Purcell and Rocky Mountains lies Cranbrook, the sunniest city in BC. With more hours of sunshine a year than any other city in BC, spend your time outdoors shooting par on one of the many golf courses in the area, or fly-fishing from the banks of the Elk or St. Mary Rivers. Get ready to party Cranbrook-style at the annual “Sam Steele Days” during the third weekend of June. Take part in a pancake breakfast, watch the Sweetheart Pageant, or sign up a team for a little three-on-three basketball. Watch the parade as it winds its way through downtown on Saturday morning. Then, the following day, take the kiddies to “Sunday in the Park,” the yearly children’s festival. With so many activities, you’ll have to stay well into the next week.

Discover the mysteries of nature when you visit the Kootenay Trout Hatchery and Visitor Centre. An interpretive centre has been set up to include aquariums, educational models and displays to show the life cycle of the fish at the Kootenay Hatchery: Rainbow and Westslope Cutthroat trout, Brook char and white sturgeon. The centre is open seven days a week, but please call ahead to make an appointment for a guided tour.

Visit the Canadian Museum of Rail Travel and take a trip back in town while you climb aboard the “Great Trains.” Immerse yourself in railway lifestyle from days gone by in this museum, which has gained national recognition for its focus on the “social history” of the railway. Located in downtown Cranbrook, the museum is open year round and shouldn’t be missed! Cranbrook is on Highway 3/95, 845 km (525 mi.) east of Vancouver. Commercial airlines and buses service the city.
